What Happens to Pet Ashes in Memorial Jewellery? The Science & Craft Behind the Process
Share
It’s one of the most common questions I receive from pet owners: “What actually happens to my pet’s ashes?”
It’s a deeply human question. When an animal we love has been cremated, their ashes feel precious beyond measure. The bond between a person and their pet is real, profound, and deserving of the same reverence as any other loss. The idea of sending those ashes away — even to be transformed into something beautiful — can feel daunting. So I want to walk you through exactly what happens, step by step, so you can feel completely at ease.

What Are Pet Cremation Ashes Made Of?
Pet cremation ashes are very similar in composition to human cremation ashes. They are made up primarily of bone fragments, reduced to a fine powder during the cremation process. They contain calcium phosphate and other minerals, which means they are remarkably stable and long-lasting.
This matters, because it means that your pet’s ashes set into jewellery will remain intact and unchanged for years — even generations. Your memorial piece is a permanent tribute to the animal who shared your life.
How Much Do You Need?
Very little. For most pet memorial jewellery pieces, we need only a small pinch — roughly half a teaspoon or less. This means that if you have multiple family members who want to remember a beloved pet, one set of ashes can be used to create several pieces.
This is also why I always return any unused ashes to you with your finished piece — nothing is ever discarded, and you’ll always have a reserve. See our FAQs for more detail on how much is needed for each type of piece.
How Are Pet Ashes Set Into Jewellery?
At Lovely Oxford, every piece is made by hand in my own workshop in South Oxfordshire. Here’s how the process typically works:
- Resin pieces — your pet’s ashes are carefully measured and mixed into a specialist clear resin, poured into a mould or bezel, and once UV-cured, become completely solid. The ashes are permanently suspended within, visible as a soft, cloudy shimmer — unique to your pet alone.
- Metal settings — for rings and pendants with a chamber or cavity, the ashes are placed inside and the piece is sealed, keeping them safe and secure within the metal itself.
- Glass locket pieces — ashes can be placed inside a self-fillable glass locket, sealed to protect them permanently. The glass dome means you can see the inclusions inside — a beautiful, transparent keepsake.
Because no two animals’ ashes are identical, no two pieces ever look exactly the same. Your jewellery will be as individual as your pet was.

Which Pieces Can Be Made With Pet Ashes?
Almost any piece in our memorial jewellery collection can be made with pet ashes. The most popular choices are:
Memorial rings — worn every day, close to the hand. Our rings range from delicate opal-set bands to wider plain bands and signet rings. Browse the full memorial rings collection.

Memorial necklaces — worn close to the heart. A pendant that holds your pet’s ashes is one of the most wearable and meaningful keepsakes you can have. Browse our memorial necklaces collection.
Memorial earrings — a subtle, beautiful way to carry your pet with you. Our stud earrings are particularly popular for everyday wear.

Glass locket bracelets and necklaces — self-fillable lockets that can hold ashes, fur, or a combination of both. Browse our memorial keepsakes collection.

Is It Safe to Handle Pet Ashes?
Yes, completely. Pet cremation ashes are sterile and safe to handle. When you send them to us, we ask that you seal them carefully in a small bag or container. Our FAQs walk you through exactly how to package and send ashes safely and legally via Royal Mail.
What Happens to Any Remaining Ashes?
Any ashes that are not used in your piece are returned to you with your finished jewellery. Nothing is ever discarded. I treat every parcel that arrives in my workshop with the utmost care — I know exactly what it contains, and what it means to you.
What About Fur Instead of Ashes?
If you still have fur from your pet — perhaps saved from a grooming session or kept after their passing — that can be preserved in jewellery too. Browse our pet fur and hair memorial jewellery collection to see what’s possible. Fur creates a beautiful, warm effect inside resin — often more visible than ashes, and equally precious.

Choosing the Right Metal for Your Pet Memorial Piece
The metal you choose affects how your piece looks, how long it lasts, and how much maintenance it needs. At Lovely Oxford we work with sterling silver, gold-filled, and solid 9ct gold — all of which are suitable for daily wear with the right care.
Read our full guide on sterling silver vs gold vs gold-fill to understand the differences, or our guide on whether memorial jewellery is waterproof for care advice. If you want to wear your piece every day — which most people do — read our guide on wearing memorial jewellery every day.
How Long Does It Take?
Once I receive your pet’s ashes, the process typically takes 1–3 weeks depending on the piece and current demand. I’ll keep you updated throughout. See our FAQs for current turnaround times.
Gifting Pet Memorial Jewellery
If you’re reading this because you want to give a pet memorial piece to someone who has lost an animal they loved — that is one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give. Pet loss is real loss, and it deserves to be acknowledged. The Finished Piece
When your jewellery is complete, it will contain a permanent, physical part of your beloved pet. It won’t fade, it won’t deteriorate, and it won’t need replacing. It is a way of keeping them close — always.
