Ladies silver channel memorial ring worn every day — handcrafted by Lovely Oxford

Can You Wear Memorial Jewellery Every Day? Everything You Need to Know

It’s one of the first questions people ask when they receive their memorial piece: can I wear this every day?

And it’s a completely understandable question. Memorial jewellery holds something irreplaceable — ashes, hair, fur, flowers, fabric — and the last thing you want is to damage it through everyday wear. But at the same time, the whole point of a memorial piece is to carry someone with you. To feel them close. To wear them, not just keep them in a box.

The good news is: yes, memorial jewellery can absolutely be worn every day. In fact, that’s exactly what it’s designed for. But there are some things worth knowing — about which pieces are most suited to daily wear, how to care for them, and what to avoid — so that your piece stays beautiful for a lifetime.

This guide covers everything.

Is Memorial Jewellery Designed for Everyday Wear?

Yes — at Lovely Oxford, every piece I make is designed to be worn. Not kept in a drawer. Not brought out for special occasions. Worn, every day, as a constant and wearable connection to someone you love.

That’s why I use genuine precious metals — sterling silver, gold-filled, and solid 9ct gold — rather than cheap base metals that would deteriorate quickly. It’s why I use high-quality, UV-cured resin rather than lower-grade alternatives. And it’s why every piece is made to a standard that I’d be happy to wear myself, every single day.

A well-made memorial piece, properly cared for, will last a lifetime. Many of our customers have been wearing their pieces daily for years. The key is understanding how to look after them — and which situations to avoid.

Which Pieces Are Best for Daily Wear?

Not all memorial jewellery is equally suited to daily wear. Here’s how the different types compare:

Rings — The Most Worn, the Most Exposed

Rings take more wear and tear than any other piece of jewellery — they’re on your hands, which go in water, touch surfaces, and come into contact with chemicals all day long. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear a memorial ring every day — many people do — but it does mean rings need the most care.

For daily wear rings, I recommend:

  • Wider bands — they distribute wear more evenly and tend to be more durable than narrow settings
  • Bezel or channel settings — where the resin is fully enclosed by metal, offering more protection than a raised setting
  • Gold-filled or solid gold settings — more resistant to tarnishing than sterling silver, requiring less maintenance
  • Removing before water activities — the single most important habit for ring longevity

Necklaces — Ideal for Daily Wear

Necklaces are generally the easiest memorial pieces to wear every day. They sit against the body rather than on the hands, which means they’re less exposed to water, chemicals, and impact. A pendant worn close to the heart is also, for many people, the most meaningful way to carry someone.

For daily wear necklaces, the main things to remember are:

  • Remove before showering, swimming, or exercising
  • Put on after applying perfume or hairspray — chemicals in these products can dull resin over time
  • Store flat or hanging — not coiled tightly, which can stress the chain

Earrings — Low Maintenance, High Wearability

Earrings are arguably the easiest memorial pieces to wear every day. They’re away from the hands, rarely come into contact with water, and don’t experience the same level of impact as rings or bracelets. A pair of memorial stud earrings can genuinely be worn from morning to night with minimal care.

The main considerations for earring daily wear:

  • Remove before swimming or showering
  • Clean the posts regularly with a soft cloth to remove any skin oils or product residue
  • Store in a box or pouch to protect the resin surface from scratching

Bracelets — Wearable with Care

Bracelets sit on the wrist, which means they’re more exposed than necklaces but less exposed than rings. They’re a beautiful daily wear option, particularly for glass locket bracelets or chain styles. The main thing to watch for is impact — bracelets can knock against surfaces, so pieces with resin inclusions should be worn with a little awareness.

The Golden Rules of Daily Wear

Whatever piece you’re wearing, these are the habits that will keep it beautiful for years:

Remove Before Water

This is the single most important rule. Remove your memorial jewellery before showering, bathing, swimming, or doing the washing up. Water — especially hot water, chlorinated water, and salt water — can affect both the metal and the resin over time. Read our full guide on whether memorial jewellery is waterproof for more detail.

A small dish or hook by the sink makes this habit easy to maintain. Put your piece there every time you wash your hands, and put it back on when you’re done.

Put It On Last, Take It Off First

When getting ready in the morning, put your jewellery on last — after perfume, hairspray, moisturiser, and any other products. When getting ready for bed or a shower, take it off first. This simple habit protects your piece from chemical exposure that can dull resin and tarnish metal over time.

Remove Before Exercise

Sweat contains salts and acids that can affect both metal and resin with repeated exposure. If you exercise regularly, make it a habit to remove your piece beforehand. This is particularly important for rings, which are in direct contact with skin during exercise.

Give It a Weekly Wipe

Once a week, give your piece a gentle wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove any oils or residue from skin contact. For sterling silver, a silver polishing cloth will keep it bright — use gently and avoid the resin surface. This takes less than a minute and makes a significant difference to how your piece looks over time.

Store It Properly

When you’re not wearing your piece, store it in the box or pouch it came in, or in a fabric-lined jewellery box. Keep it away from direct sunlight (which can yellow resin over time) and away from other jewellery that could scratch the resin surface. Avoid storing in a bathroom, where humidity is high.

How Long Will My Memorial Piece Last With Daily Wear?

A well-made memorial piece, properly cared for, should last a lifetime — and beyond. Here’s what to expect from each metal with daily wear:

Sterling silver — will tarnish over time with daily wear, but this is completely reversible with a silver polishing cloth. The metal itself is durable and long-lasting. With regular polishing and proper care, a sterling silver piece can look beautiful for decades.

Gold-filled — extremely durable for daily wear. The thick gold layer won’t tarnish or fade with normal wear, and gold-filled pieces can last 10–30 years or more with basic care. An excellent choice for daily wear.

Solid 9ct gold — the most durable option for daily wear. Gold doesn’t tarnish, doesn’t corrode, and doesn’t fade. A solid gold piece will outlast its owner with proper care. The premium choice for a piece you intend to wear every single day for the rest of your life.

What About the Resin?

The resin in your memorial piece is UV-cured and designed to be durable — but it’s not indestructible. Here’s what to know about resin and daily wear:

  • Scratching — resin can be scratched by harder materials. Avoid storing your piece loose with other jewellery, and be mindful of surfaces that could scratch it during wear
  • Yellowing — prolonged UV exposure can cause resin to yellow over time. Store away from direct sunlight when not wearing
  • Cloudiness — usually caused by water exposure or chemical contact. If your resin develops surface cloudiness, contact me and I’ll advise on the best approach
  • Impact — a sharp knock can chip resin. Be mindful of this particularly with rings, which are most exposed to impact

The good news: with normal daily wear and the care habits above, resin holds up extremely well. Many of our customers have been wearing their pieces daily for years without any issues.

What If My Piece Gets Damaged?

If your piece is damaged during daily wear — whether the metal has tarnished, the resin has clouded, or something more significant has happened — please contact me directly. I will always do my best to help, and I’ll advise honestly on what’s possible.

This is also why I always return unused ashes or hair to you after making your piece — so that if the worst happens, you have a small reserve. See our FAQs for more information on this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sleep in my memorial jewellery?

We recommend removing it before sleep. Sleeping in jewellery — particularly rings and bracelets — can cause the piece to catch on bedding, which can stress the setting or chain over time. It also means the piece is in contact with skin for longer, which can accelerate tarnishing in silver. Removing it before bed is a simple habit that significantly extends the life of your piece.

Can I wear my memorial ring in the shower?

We recommend removing it. Hot water, steam, and shower products can affect both the resin and the metal over time. See our full guide on whether memorial jewellery is waterproof.

Can I wear memorial jewellery to the gym?

We recommend removing it before exercise. Sweat contains salts and acids that can affect metal and resin with repeated exposure. If you do wear it to the gym, wipe it down gently with a soft cloth afterwards.

Will wearing my piece every day wear down the ashes or hair inside?

No — the inclusions are sealed inside the resin and completely protected from the outside environment. Normal daily wear will not affect what’s inside your piece. The only risk is if the resin itself is damaged — which is why we recommend the care habits above.

My sterling silver piece has tarnished — is it damaged?

No — tarnishing is completely normal for sterling silver and is not damage. It’s a natural chemical reaction that can be reversed with a silver polishing cloth. Use gently, avoiding the resin surface, and your piece will look bright and beautiful again. See our care instructions for full guidance.

How do I know if my piece needs professional attention?

If you notice cracking or chipping in the resin, a compromised seal, or any changes that concern you, please contact me sooner rather than later. Surface tarnishing and minor cloudiness can usually be addressed at home — but anything more significant is worth discussing with me directly.

A Note From Me

I make memorial jewellery to be worn. Not kept. Not saved for special occasions. Worn — every day, close to the body, close to the heart.

Because that’s what it’s for. To carry someone with you. To feel them there when you look down at your hand, or reach up to touch a pendant. To have something tangible, something real, something that says: I carry you with me. Every day.

If you have any questions about daily wear, care, or choosing the right piece, please get in touch. I’m always here.
